Glacial Lake of Bajura (Name Yet to Be Decided)

About the This Glacial Lake

This glacial lake is located in the far-western region of Nepal at 81°34'38.23"E and 29°53'50.64"N has shown significant expansion over the past three decades. In 1992, satellite observations indicated only a very small water body with a surface area of about 0.028 km², suggesting minimal glacial meltwater accumulation at that time. By 2024, however, the lake had expanded considerably, covering an area of approximately 0.336 km². This more than ten times increase in size reflects the rapid growth of glacial lakes in the Himalaya, likely linked to enhanced glacier melt under changing climatic conditions. Such expansion highlights the dynamic nature of high-mountain glacial environments and underscores the emerging risks associated with the development of new and enlarging glacial lakes in Nepal’s far-western Himalaya.
